Maths Intent
At Charles Baines Primary School we believe that children should experience the awe and wonder of mathematics as they learn to solve problems. We make maths fun, engaging and child orientated with hands on experiences, and make links between the different areas of maths. We believe maths is a universal language; it helps us to describe, make sense, investigate, understand and respect our ever-changing world.
Our maths links to other subjects where possible, we try to make our maths ‘real maths’, making our learning and experiences relevant to everyday life. We aim to make maths an exciting and varied experience to enable children to flourish and achieve.
Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
Be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and model real-life scenarios.
Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
Have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics.
